Thoughts On Skrillex Scary Monsters And Nice Sprites
“I’m a coward too / You don’t need to hide, my friend / For I’m just like you”
I’m always a fan of new music, and especially checking out the dubstep scene from London – everything from Skream to Benga . So I wanted to arrange Skrillex this week as a tribute to the genre and a well written song that captures a beautiful ideology that we can all relate to – being a coward, together.
Released in October 2010, the song has became a sort of staple in the scene, and lent itself perfectly for an orchestration due to it’s fortissimo “dubstep” sections in between the soft and lonely interludes. We’re all cowards, but when we stand together we become stronger than we could ever imagine. The hardest part is that first step, but overcoming that obstacle leads to a fresh new realization that we can be bold.
There’s a musician (and huge influence on me) named Varien who did a fantastic suite involving this song, and I really wanted to capture my style of this piece in its entirety. I wanted to stick with all acoustic instruments, so the drums may have a different feel to them, but ultimately I’m thrilled with the result. I wanted a lot of brass punches to contribute to the heavy sections, and I wanted the flutes to give off the feeling of “being a coward”.
‘Scary Monsters And Nice Sprites’, to me, is about how things are exponential, so choose your path wisely. If you choose to be a coward, then you will feel alone and gravitate to others who share the same feelings. But that will only further push you down in an endless route. However, if you choose to be bold, then you may stand alone at first, but slowly you will find others along the way who believe in your journey and purpose.
That’s what this piece equates to me.
