My good friend Ben Parr recently twittered “I love my job, even if I can never finish all the things I want to do.”

This is exactly what I always talk about, and it started with what my English teach Mr. Mancinelli would always say: “Pick a career that never finishes. If you choose a field that you master by the time you graduate, then you’ll never be happy. Continue to grow and push yourself – that’s what its about.” I don’t remember much else about him other than that he was a young guy, pretty cool, and a Bruce Springsteen diehard.

On our last day in High School he handed out a pamphlet for us all to read and prepare for college. In it was his advice for us upon graduating (which I’ll blog about soon – the advice is great, and I still have it to this day). Tricks and tips like how to bullshit your professor, how to get free food and clothes through your college, resist the urge to be average, and much more. His seventh bullet point was “never finish what you do” and it always stuck with me.

I hit a road block with my music show last year. After teaching How to Read Music you archive it and can’t really teach it again. So after 400 tutorials there wasn’t much more I could do. It didn’t scale, and I my heart was always for the orchestra since day 1.

At the end of each day you should have a list of things you haven’t gotten around to finishing – this is something to always look forward to. It keeps us occupied, it makes us innovate, work harder, and smarter.

Its a crazy life, one that we learn as we grow. The rest you’ll have to find out on your own. But in all you do, always make sure you never get comfortable.
