My last few posts have been about reflecting, revisiting, going out more, and going back to my roots.

In a world of loud guitars, one hot NYC minute, and moving fast, I have had some of the best weeks of my life recently by just taking it slow, and going with the flow.

Last week my good friend David Chaitt hosted his first Backyard Brunch Session at his Brooklyn apartment, and it was awesome.

The band who to kick off the festivities was ARMS, and they brought it. Not shy from performing at SXSW, the drummer used forks and knives against a pasta container for the drums (how cool is THAT?!). The acoustics were horrible and didn’t stick around long. It was a small, select crowd. And it was perfect.

As I grow older I begin to not only look back, but also act younger, appreciate my past more, and revisit it. I remember when I was 16 how I always attended these things -bands playing at pool parties, Battle of the Bands, Nintendo nights, basement games on a Friday night after school, riding my bike to a friends house, pick-up basketball games, birthday parties.

It’s always an awesome remedy to break from the mold. Sometimes it’s just what you need. In a world where every birthday party is grabbing drinks at a bar, every concert is deafeningly loud, and every conversation starts with ‘so what do you do’ – the performance was a breathe of fresh air. I was relaxed, with my closest friends, sun was shining, and listening to soothing, awesome live music that was as authentic as it gets.
