Few musicians spark my interest, but one thing is always addictive and intriguing – passion.

The other day I had the pleasure to connect with Maestro Benjamin Zander who was nominated for a Grammy this week. I was introduced to him through Lauren Amarante who started World E Ship Day, and quickly became a fan.

His energy was addictive – the way he spoke and described music was inspiring. We talked about social media, classical music, where it’s all headed. But one thing struck me: Maestro Zander repeatedly said “You ain’t seen nothing yet.” I couldn’t help but get caught up in his excitement for the classical repertoire. We need more people like him.

I even met Zander’s assistant Stephanie Stetson first when she attended my Boston Symphony performance on New Year’s Eve. We had a great time, and it’s good to see good things happen to good people.

So when he was 1 of 5 conductors in the world nominated for a Grammy for recording Bruckner’s 5th – it’s unfortunate to report that he did not win – but this isn’t about that. It’s about change, and the fact that people notice and are paying attention. It was a huge accomplishment either way – both for Maestro Zander and the classical music world. It was an unconventional score, a different perspective in an old genre, and a breathe of fresh air.

I want to personally congratulate them on the nomination. Although they didn’t win, they succeeded. And yes – “We ain’t seen nothing yet”
